With just one big pot-hole hit, all the arms and couplings that extend from the axel to the wheel are effected. From the rack-and-pinion to the shocks, the whole mechanism is subject to loosening and damage. The dangerous part is that if some of the connectors are loosened, over time some of the arms that keep your wheel in place can disconnect. This is why you sometimes see people on the side of the road with a wheel turned the wrong way and coming off.

Belts
Belts need to replaced on a regular bases as they have a limited life and get worn out as they work as hard as many of the metal parts in your engine. Since your belts are not metal but a type of rubber and cloth, their integrity as reliable parts of your engine system. A quick check can let you know how your belts are fairing though some, like your timing belt is often buried deep in your engine. If your timing belt goes out, it will render your motor almost useless. However that particular belt lasts for about 100,000 drive miles before it needs to be replaced.
Drivetrain
